The FAA is proposing to fix a technicality in the Federal Aviation Regulations that prevents pilots flying under BasicMed from operating, in most cases, as safety pilots under simulated instrument conditions.

The fix is included in a recently released notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that requires commercial balloon pilots to hold second-class medicals, to fulfill a Congressional mandate implemented after a high-profile accident several years ago. When the FAA created BasicMed in 2017, it directly copied the law passed by Congress that required the agency to do so. After a somewhat disappointing revelation of UFO activity in the summer of 2021, with some unusual footage and a few shrugs from the relevant authorities. After much buildup about answers, truth, and strange happenings, the end result was a bit underwhelming for those who imagined secret databanks of flagrant alien operations or mysterious, spooky phenomena. The Pentagon must take the occurrences seriously, however, as they have opened the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG). Tecnam’s P2010 TDI has been awarded a full Type Certificate in some great news for those wanting more general aviation aircraft compatible with diesel and Jet-A fuels. The 4-seat, high wing, single-engine aircraft combines economical performance, sleek aerodynamics, and modern avionics provide an interesting alternative to traditional competing aircraft. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
