Boeing Looks To Stretch The 737 MAX ... Again

Proposed 10x Variant Of The Aircraft Would Be 66 Inches Longer Than The MAX 9

Boeing is reportedly discussing a longer variant of its 737 MAX line that would have a capacity of up to 230 people.

Aviation consultancy Air Insight reports on its blog that that Boeing sales representatives have been given "authority to offer" the 737 MAX 10x airplane, which would be 66 inches longer than the MAX 9 and have a slightly higher MTOW. It would also feature a redesigned "trailing-link" main landing gear, which would offer better runway performance than the MAX 9. Entry into service would be sometime in the 2020 time frame.

The aircraft would be close to the capacity of the 757, which went out of production in 2003. Boeing has determined that the range niche for the 757 is too small to pursue, but the MAX10 would be capacity-focused, and could be brought to market more quickly.

The most likely customer for the MAX 10x would be current customers for the 737-900ER or those who have MAX 9 aircraft on order, and it would likely be a stronger competitor for the popular Airbus A321 than the MAX 9, according to the consultant.
