The Big One That DIDN'T Get Away

Hawaiian Fisherman Catch Aircraft Wing

Whenever fishermen get together to tell tales of the one that got away, three guys from Oahu, Hawaii, are likely to take top honors about the one that they actually caught. Three Hawaiian fishermen snagged the wing of a Cozy SportPlane (file photo, shown below) that went down off the coast of Maui last week. Retired Coast Guard pilot  William Swears went down some 94 miles North of Maui after an engine problem forced him into the drink on a flight back to the mainland from Honolulu.

Fisherman aboard the "Shaka One" caught the drifting wing some 12 miles from Makapuu... although at first glance, they thought they had found a dead whale. Though it was hard to grapple and secure, Skipper Andrew Trozzi recovered the wing despite the rough water, and plans to surrender the debris to investigators looking into the November 15th ditching.

Swears spent only three hours in the water, after the ditching... being rescued by guys he recognized readily -- the US Coast Guard.
