Aero-TV: Mods For The Venerable Murphy Moose

Ten Unique Murphy Modifications

Ray Watson, owner of MooseMods & LS Aeroengines took a moment out of AirVenture ‘23 to catch Jim Campbell of Aero News up on what’s moving and shaking in his shop. His outfit specializes in modding the Murphy family of aircraft, providing a turnkey GM LS3 engine conversion for Moose owners. It’s a nifty installation, thanks to the classic V8’s high performance. Watson said his flight out to Oshkosh saw about 170 mph TAS while the LS3 loafed along at 15 gph on 91 octane mogas.

For a big, capacious aircraft with some fat rubber hanging off the gear, that’s a pretty livable cruise. The base model MooseMod LS3 pumps out 480 hp at cruise, well-matched to its custom PSRU. Those who want even more power can opt for the Monster Moose package, offering 525 hp. That’s not all MooseMods has on tap, either. Watson said they offer 10 different Murphy modifications, whether it’s structural enhancement, modified doors, improved landing gear, or their firewall-forward engine conversions.
