Firewall Forward Offers New Self-Oiling Camshaft For Small Lycomings

Firewall Forward has received FAA approval for its self-oiling camshaft retrofit for Lycoming O-320 and O-360 engines. This addition compliments their previously available upgrades for the O-540 and O-541, which have been available for three years.

Here’s how it works: Firewall Forward inserts plugs into the ends of the hollow camshaft, and holes are drilled in the lobes. Oil is then able to circulate through the interior of the shaft, and back through the lobes, preventing premature wear.

By introducing a continuous flow of oil between the cam lobe and lifter face, the friction and temperatures are dramatically reduced. All of this happens without adding any additional moving parts.

That seems to work... as prior to the mod, the failure rate of camshafts on O-541 engines hovered at 30-35 percent, according to the company; with the mod, the failure rate is down to 1.3%.

Furthermore, oil circulating inside the shaft aids in preventing corrosion.

“The biggest reason for premature camshaft failure is when a pilot doesn’t fly the aircraft enough," said Tom Larson, Sales Manager for Firewall  Forward. "When the engine sits for a long period of time, it will develop corrosion, and that leads to failure.”

Cost for the modification is $350 for the O-320 and O-360, and $450 for the O-540. It is usually performed in conjunction with an overhaul.

In addition to the camshaft mods, Firewall Forward also specializes in overhauls, prop-strike inspections, accessories and performance mods.
