Cabin Door Falls From Airplane

That Next Step Is A Biggie!

Losing a door in flight is not fun. Doing so with a planeload of prisoners is outright scary. This is exactly what happened when the main cabin door of a Beechcraft King Air E-90 (file photo of type, right) fell right off in flight over Galesburg (IL) on Thursday. The turboprop -- Tidewater Aero LLC of Norfolk (VA) -- was headed for Marion (VA) and four prisoners and two guards onboard when the pilot reported hearing "a loud bang" after departing the Galesburg Municipal Airport at 2:20 p.m.

Much to his dismay, one of the guards discovered the door had completely detached from the aircraft. At 2:45 p.m., officials at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail- yard phoned the police to advise the missing door was sitting in their own backyard. In typical FAA fashion, Elizabeth Isham Cory of the FAA's Great Lakes Region headquarters in Des Plaines classified the event as "extremely unusual." The investigation continues.
