Model Politics: Agreement Between MAAC and AMA No Longer In Effect

To Fly Model Aircraft In Canada As A US Resident, You Must Have A MAAC Membership

The former mutual agreement between the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC) and AMA is no longer in effect because of the recent changes in the country’s Canadian Aviation Regulation (Canada’s counterpart to the FAA) Part IX and the exemption granted to MAAC and its members.

In order to fly model aircraft in Canada as a US resident, you must have a MAAC membership. There are two options to join MAAC. You can purchase a temporary 90-day foreign membership for $40 CAD or a full membership for $80 CAD. Please visit MAAC’s website for more information.

At this time, AMA is not requiring MAAC members to join AMA to fly at our fields and events. Current MAAC members visiting the US can continue model aviation activities while at an AMA chartered club field and/or AMA sanctioned event while abiding by both the AMA and MAAC Safety Codes; however, AMA does encourage MAAC members to sign up as AMA Affiliate members.

All other nonpermanent US residents—including Canadians who are not MAAC members—must sign up as an AMA Affiliate member to participate in model aviation activities.

The AMA Executive Council will continue to evaluate this situation.
