Classic Aero-TV: Viking Aircraft Engines -- Powerful Yet Efficient Alternatives

From 2011: An Alternative Sport Powerplant Shows Great Promise... And Power

At the 2011 US Sport Aviation Expo, few displays got more attention than Viking Aircraft Engines. In an industry heavily dominated by one powerplant manufacturer (and one whose prices keep heading for the stratosphere), then news of what appears to be a solid alternative engine offering sure gets everyone's interest.

The latest offering from Viking Aircraft Engines Jan Eggenfellner is the Honda-based HF-100 sport aviation powerplant.

The product of an experienced engine design team in Florida, the HF-110 engine shares moving parts with the Honda fit automobile, the Honda outboard marine engine and the Honda race engine.

The engine has an estimated TBO of 2000 hrs, and powerplant installation kits are either available or being prepared for Jabiru Aircraft, CH-601 XL, CH-601 HD, CH-650, CH-750, CH-701, RV-12, Storch, IBIS MAGIC 700, SeaRey, Sonex, Savannah XL, and the Morgan Aeroworks Cougar.

The fully assembled engine comes with a 40A Alternator, Dual Engine controllers,  Exhaust / Muffler, Air intake, K&N Filter, Starter, Radiator, Oil cooler, fuel pumps and an Engine mounting kit for your airplane. The price is $13,000.

Designer Jan Eggenfellner first made a name for himself with a number of Subaru conversion projects... and is a professional pilot and aircraft mechanic. He has six years of college behind him, with degrees in Aviation Management, Flight Operations and Aviation Technology.

He has been building aircraft engines since 1992 and does all the test flying himself.
