AMA Drone Report 02.07.19: Super Bowl Drones, TN UAV Regs, Yuneec Expands H520

Also: Gatwick Incident $$$, Jumping Drone, AMA Membership Meeting, Aero-TV: DJI’s Mightiest Mavic

During Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta on Feb. 3, 2019, Intel Corporation partnered with the NFL to create the first-ever live drone light show during a Super Bowl Halftime Show  And let’s face it, if you read the reviews, this year’s Half-Time activities needed all the help they could get.

As Maroon 5 began the song “She Will Be Loved,” 150 enhanced Intel Shooting Star drones floated up and over the field in a choreographed performance to the music to form the words “ONE” and “LOVE.” Intel enhanced the Intel Shooting Star drones specifically for the Super Bowl Halftime Show to emulate the  experience of floating lanterns. Here we go again... A bill introduced into the Tennessee Legislature would make flying a drone in some areas a Class E felony punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000. The bill, introduced by state Sen. Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol, and state Rep. Bud Husley, R-Kingsport would increase the penalties, "using an unmanned aircraft over a critical infrastructure facility without the business operator's consent from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class E felony," according to the Tennessee General Assembly website. Yuneec International’s commercial hexacopter, the H520, will now optionally be available with an RTK (Real Time Kinematic) system from the Swiss company Fixposition. The RTK system reportedly ensures maximum precision and centimeter-precise positioning. By using RTK technology, the H520 can now fly much closer to objects for inspection as the UAV positions itself precisely in the centimeter range rather than in the meter range -- standard for the H520. This accuracy is paramount for applications where several images need to be taken at the same location on different days. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
