Airborne 04.03.20: EAA-Sportys, AUS Suspends UAV Reg, A/C Registry Probs

Also: Raytheon-United Tech Merger, Aviation Database NPRM, Air Force Academy Tragedy, Crew Dragon Mockup Jettisoned

Another milestone was reached by EAA this month, as a total of 75,000 Young Eagles have now taken the next step in their aviation journeys by enrolling in Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course after their EAA Young Eagles flights.

The online Sporty’s course is available free to all of the more than 2.2 million EAA Young Eagles as a follow-up to their initial introductory flight by volunteer EAA-member pilots. The course is a comprehensive online ground school, test prep, and flight training companion that provides all the knowledge and concepts to pass the FAA Private Pilot written test, oral exam, and checkride. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of Australia has announced a number of measures to alleviate pressure on Australian RPA operators while ensuring the ongoing safety of aviation. COVID-19 is expected to continue to disrupt business and operations for some time, so we are putting in place further measures to assist the RPAS industry. Drone registration for commercial operators and excluded category operators was scheduled to commence on 1 April 2020 in line with legislation that was passed in July 2019. The U.S. aircraft registry, managed by the FAA, maintains information on approximately 300,000 civil aircraft. The FAA issues aircraft registration to individuals and entities that meet eligibility requirements, such as U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residence. Registry fraud and abuse hinders the ability of law-enforcement and safety officials to use the registry to identify aircraft and their owners who might be involved in illicit or unsafe operations. GAO was asked to examine registry fraud and abuse. In its report, the GAO assesses FAA’s actions to (1) prevent, (2) detect, and (3) respond to fraud and abuse risks in aircraft registrations. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
