Historic DC-3 To Be Displayed At Greenville, SC Municipal Airport

Tours, Local Flights Will Be Offered

The recently restored Flagship Detroit airplane, an original DC-3 delivered to American Airlines in 1937 will be on display at GMU on Sunday and Monday, March 21st and 22nd.

Owned and operated by a private volunteer foundation, the aircraft has recently completed a major restoration to return the exterior and interior to the original configuration. Members of the Flagship Detroit Foundation will be on hand to provide tours and answer questions about this historic aircraft. After the airshow, an opportunity to join the foundation and enjoy a "Ride Back in Time" (local flight) will be available.

Flagship Detroit is the oldest flying DC-3 in the world.  The Flagship Detroit Foundation is a non-profit organization of men and women who have joined together to rejuvenate this airplane and to educate the youth and the flying public of a very significant era in the history of the U. S. and world airline industry.

According to the website "Aviationhistory.com", the DC-3 was a slightly larger version of the Douglas DC-2, built to accommodate sleeping accommodations for cross-country flights. The first prototype flew December 17th, 1935. It was built in a 21 passenger "daytimer" configuration, or a 14-passenger sleeper.
