CASA Sets New Weight-Check Rules

Periodic Re-Weighing Required

Australia's CASA has figured out that, just like people, airplanes can gain weight over time, unless someone's watching very closely. Here's an excerpt of their newly-released directive:

The Order amends section 100.7 to allow the use by operators of an average weight and centre of gravity (fleet values) for multi-engine aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of more than 2,800 kg used in regular public transport operations. Operators will be able to establish and use fleet values for aeroplanes of the same model and configuration.

The amendments contain various conditions relating to the establishment and use of fleet values. To be included in a "fleet," variation from the fleet values of an aeroplane's individual weight and centre of gravity must be within the prescribed limits. The fleet values have to be re-established every 4 years after re-weighing the required number of aircraft. Every aircraft in a fleet has to be weighed at least once every 9 years. The procedures followed by the operator have to be documented to ensure that the establishment, review and use of the average weight and centre of gravity are in accordance with the requirements of the Order.
