Stewart International Crew Steps Up In FedEx Emergency

Clears Runway In Six Minutes So B727 Can Land

Here's an example of the fast thinking that saves lives.

When a FedEx Boeing 727 headed from Boston to Indianapolis declared an emergency Tuesday because of severe fumes filling the cockpit, the pilot declared an emergency and asked to land at Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, NY. But there was one problem: the 727 needed the longer of Stewart's two runways which was closed so its lighting system could be refurbished.

As soon as the tower got the call, though, work crews scrambled to get all the equipment off the runway -- and they did it in six minutes flat.

The FedEx plane made a normal landing and the three-person crew slid down emergency chutes to safety. The problem aboard the Boeing was later traced to a faulty fan.

We at Aero-News have decided if we sponsor a NASCAR team, those runway workers are welcome to work on our pit crew anytime!
