Marine Aviation Suffering Due To Budget Constraints

USMC's Top Aviator Says Readiness Has Been Declining For Several Years

The effects of budget cuts are having an impact on aviation readiness in the U.S. Marine Corps, according to the Corps' top aviator.

Lt. Gen. Jon Davis (pictured), deputy commandant for Marine aviation, said recently that readiness of Marine aircraft has been "spiraling downward" for several years. He said that he has been forced to underfund readiness accounts for several years, and "you can't sustain that forever."

The Marine Corps Times reports that Davis said chronic underfunding has delayed maintenance of aircraft at both the unit and depot levels, dropping the number of operational aircraft to 19 percent below its acceptable minimum.

Davis said that if adequate funding were to become available, he has a plan that would return aircraft readiness to acceptable levels within four years.

He also said that to improve readiness, and safety, the Marine Corps needs more enlisted personnel in the maintenance community.
