The U.S. Navy has awarded a contract to General Dynamics Mission Systems to restore and maintain a satellite system simulator for students at the Naval Postgraduate School, Spacecraft Research and Design Center / Adaptive Optics Center of Excellence. The simulator, a model of a Navy Fleet Satellite (FLTSAT) communications satellite, will help students hone their skills in managing the technical aspects of space systems including satellite command, control and communications and troubleshooting satellite and constellation anomalies.

Drone In Mexico Helps Authorities Significantly Decrease Crime

Has Led To More than 500 Arrests In Only A Few Months Of Operation

A drone operated by authorities in Ensenada, Mexico about to hours south of Tijuana has led to a significant decrease in overall crime in the city. Ensenada police say that in only a few months operation, their one DJI Inspire 1 drone has led to more than 500 arrests and contributed to an overall 10 percent drop in the crime rate, including a 30 percent drop in residential robberies.

Airbus Helicopters Delivers Fifth And Final H135 For Bundeswehr Training

Will Be Used For Initial And Recurrent Pilot Instruction

Airbus Helicopters has delivered the fifth and final H135 that will be used by the German Armed Forces in Bückeburg to train their pilots. The German Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) is leasing these helicopters – all delivered on time by Airbus – for initial and recurrent pilot training.

ALMA Discovers Trio Of Infant Planets Around Newborn Star

Considered The First Planets Discovered By The Telescope

Two independent teams of astronomers have used ALMA to uncover convincing evidence that three young planets are in orbit around the infant star HD 163296. Using a novel planet-finding technique, the astronomers identified three disturbances in the gas-filled disc around the young star: the strongest evidence yet that newly formed planets are in orbit there. These are considered the first planets to be discovered with ALMA.

Opportunity Rover In Standby Mode Due To Massive Dust Storm

One of the thickest dust storms ever observed on Mars has been spreading for the past week and a half. The storm has caused NASA's Opportunity rover to suspend science operations, but also offers a window for four other spacecraft to learn from the swirling dust. NASA has three orbiters circling the Red Planet, each equipped with special cameras and other atmospheric instruments. Additionally, NASA's Curiosity rover has begun to see an increase in dust at its location in Gale Crater.
