Spirit Airlines Touts Benefits Of Having A 'Mile High' Captive Audience

Note: This Story May Not Be What You're Thinking It's About

Advertising is all about getting attention. So, what did Spirit Airlines decide to call its new initiative to plaster the inside of its planes with advertising? Mile High Media.

Now that we have your attention, here's what the airline is telling advertisers:

"Spirit Airlines is the best value in travel for passengers and now the company's new Mile High Media offers the best value in advertising compared to traditional media outlets. Where else can you find an average three-hour gaze time? Advertisers can choose from a variety of customizable media options including seat backs, window shades, overhead bins, tray tables, drink carts and more."

The first taker The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. Its ads will appear on all Spirit Airlines flights starting this week... and the airline is actively courting additional sponsors. (Who knows... if they get enough sponsors, maybe there will even be a club for advertisers! Of course, they'll have to change the name.)

Wanna make a wild guess what the excuse is for needing more revenue? Mile High Media Sales Director Michael Pewther says, "In addition to providing unsurpassed value to our advertising partners, Mile High Media helps offset record fuel prices, which helps us to continue offering our customers the ultra low fares they know and love."

It's not clear how discreet the ads will be. Bahamas Tourism ads are described as colorful and appealing, and they'll be everywhere... overhead bins, tray tables, bulkheads, and seatback inserts.

Spirit says only a select few advertising partners will be featured on each flight... in hopes customers won't feel totally inundated by advertisements, or see tray table graphics touting Coke products right next to window shades espousing the wondrous joys of Pepsi.

Wow. Ads everywhere you look. We'll bet ANN readers are sure glad our Web site doesn't have to do that...
