Sinclair College Asks For UAV Exemption From FAA

Wants To Fly Aircraft Locally As Part Of Aviation Curriculum

Sinclair Community College in Dayton, OH, has asked the FAA for permission to fly UAVs at the Springfield, OH, Air National Guard base in order to facilitate a training program for controllers.

If approved, the community college could begin offering a hands-on training program as early as next year, according to a report from the Dayton Daily News. The closest approved area for UAV flights to the college is currently at the Indiana National Guard's Camp Atterbury near Columbus, IN.

Sinclair has put more than a year into preparing its application to the FAA. They plan to purchase two aircraft from a local company at a cost of about $35,000 each. The aircraft would be flown only under the supervision of an instructor.

The college already has a program for airline pilots. It is working with the nonprofit Unmanned Applications Institute International based in North Dakota to develop the UAV program.
