AUVSI's Wynn Calls For More UAV Regulations

Says Such Measures Needed Until FAA Finalizes Small UAS Rules

In a keynote speech at the Ohio Unmanned Aircraft System conference in Dayton, Ohio, AUVSI president and CEO Brian Wynne called for more regulation of UAS. Wynne said that until the FAA finalizes its long awaited small UAS rules, there is much uncertainty about where operators should and should not fly and for what purpose.

“We want this to be a gateway to aviation, and for the existing industry to embrace these craft,” he said. “As the industry stands up we can use the support of the existing aviation community that will move it forward.”

Wynne also spoke at the dedication of the $5 million National Unmanned Aerial Systems Training and Certification Center at Sinclair Community College. The 28,000-square foot center will enable students to build and test unmanned aircraft.

“Wilbur Wright, one of the famous brothers from Dayton who invented manned aviation, said to be successful, begin life in Ohio,” said Wynne. “Today, Ohio and Dayton are again at the center of new generation of aviation, unmanned aircraft systems, thanks to the National UAS Certification and Training Center at Sinclair College. Sinclair is providing Ohioans with access to innovative instruction and research to help them launch fulfilling careers in the burgeoning field of UAS, which according to an AUVSI report is forecast to create thousands of jobs across Ohio and the nation during the next several years.”
