Aero-TV: Nighthawk Launches Next-Gen Avionics System

Guardian PFD/MFD Brings High Tech, High Safety Features to the GA Cockpit

Nighthawk Flight Systems made quite a splash at this year’s EAA Oshkosh AirVenture, taking the stage with a next-generation modular avionics system dubbed the “Guardian”. The product aims to bring airline-level safety features into the world of general aviation.

“We aimed directly at coming to Oshkosh with a real product, ready to deliver,” said Nighthawk CEO Paul Martin. “And that’s where we are today.”

The Guardian includes 7-inch or 11.6-inch PFD/MFD screens, powered by the Nest modular avionics suite that can be installed anywhere in the aircraft. It contains synthetic vision and Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS/HeliTAWS) on extremely detailed graphics, or what the company calls a “digital twin” of the earth, to improve situational awareness.

“The idea was that we wanted to provide a system to all pilots to let them pick what it is they want. Not what we want them to buy - what do they want, what do they need, what can their budget support, so that they can get airline level of safety into a general aviation airplane,” Martin continued.

The system claims to hit around 30 percent lower cost than competitors, with a full glass cockpit for a King Air priced under $110K, down to around $40k for the whole system in a smaller or less complex aircraft. Nighthawk is targeting deliveries by the end of the year.
