R44 Helicopters Show Up In Iran

Reportedly Purchased Through 'Dealers' Despite Embargo

An Iranian company has acquired four Robinson R44 helicopters despite international trade sanctions against that country due to their disputed nuclear program.

The helicopters were displayed during an air exhibition in Kish Island in the Persian Gulf, according to a report from the Associated Press. They were acquired by Iran's Helicopter Company, reportedly at a "marked up price" through "dealers." The aircraft will be used for training and police air patrols, according to Helicopter Company chief Mahmoud Azin.

Azin told the Tasnim news website that the acquisition showed that the trade sanctions were ineffective in stopping such transactions. The AP reported that it was not immediately clear if the sale violated those sanctions.
