At Least 19 Fatally Injured In Russian Helo Accident

Mi-8 Was Ferrying Oil And Gas Workers On The Northern Yamal Peninsula

A Russian Mi-8 ferrying oil and gas workers on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Russia went down Friday, resulting in the fatal injury of 19 of the people on board.

Three people survived the accident, according to a report from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

One of the injured passengers was able to get through to Russian Emergency Ministry rescuers by cell phone, but it still took hours for first responders to reach the remote site. Weather was reportedly poor in the area when the helicopter went down. The first team had to travel by snow machine to the site, some 43 miles from Urengoy. Helicopters were dispatched later.

According to the Russian Transport Ministry, the Mi-8 belonged to the Skol air company. Officials said that the aircraft's flight recorders were recovered "in good condition."
