AeroSports Update: Academy of Model Aeronautics Awards Ten Scholarships

The World Of Aviation And Aerospace Grew Out Of Big Ideas In Miniature Form, And Today We Know This As Model Aviation.

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) stands strong in support of model aviation and all aviation and aerospace endeavors, and actively supports outstanding high school students around the country by providing scholarship funds. The Academy of Model Aeronautics has recently awarded scholarships to 10 students pursuing higher education.

Starting in 1970, the Academy of Model Aeronautics has awarded more than $881,000 in yearly scholarships to students with model aviation experience and high standings within their schools. The scholarships are granted with funds donated by model aviation organizations and individuals, AMA member donations, a portion of AMA member dues, and direct donations from the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

The Charles H. Grant Scholarship Program contains other grants, which look at additional specific factors to determine the award. The Toledo Weak Signals award began in 1988 and is awarded to the top three recipients of the AMA/Charles H. Grant Scholarship. The Telford Scholarship is also given out each year and is based on participation in competition activity in the AMA and FAI classifications. Added in 2013, the Basil and Dorothy Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a current college student pursuing an engineering or technical degree while enrolled at an accredited four-year institution.

The Academy would like to congratulate the following students who were granted scholarships in 2014:

• Eric Gilkey of Shelby Township, MI
• Joshua Gaus of Ellicot City, MD
• Kevin Demauro of Woodhaven, NY
• Nathaniel Jones of Louisburg, KS
• Jason Plummer of Byfield, MA
• Grant Conery of Dalton Gardens, ID
• Royce Chung of Los Altos, CA
• Gary Cooper of Mount Pleasant, NC
• Charles Wright of Blossvale, NY
• Cale Speiser of Gladstone, MO.

Scholarship total for this year is $41,000. The deadline to apply for the 2015 AMA scholarships is February 1, 2015.
