Customs to Keep Tabs on DC, From Air

By ANN Correspondent Pete Combs

The skies above the nation's capital will soon be patrolled by the U.S. Customs Service. Customs spokesman Kevin Bell says the operation is set to start on Monday at the request of the newly-created Homeland Security Department. Other agencies, including the Secret Service, the Department of Defense, and the FAA will provide assistance in what Bell says will become a "permanent" part of that region's security makeup.

The main focus of the patrols will be to protect sensitive government buildings like the Capitol, the Pentagon and White House, in the same manner as they did in the days following the 9-11 attacks. [Against smugglers? After all, that's what Customs does --ed.]
