What Could Go Wrong?

The FAA is recruiting pilots attending EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 to participate in a paid research study.

To complete the study in question, the FAA needs adult pilots (aged 18-years or older) who’ve flown at least once in the last six-months, to include Part 142 simulator training time, and who hold current Class I, II, or III (not BasicMed) medical certification. The test session spans approximately four-hours and pays $300, $400, or $500—dependent on medical certification class.

Payment is dispersed immediately following participation.

Participants will be asked to complete two computerized cognitive tests designed to evaluate working memory, focus, attention-span, mental rotation, and multitasking performance. The study, which has received FAA Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, sets out to obtain pilot normative data germane to the aforementioned computerized tests—which the FAA intends to utilizes for purpose of helping recertify pilots following medical events the likes of stroke, head injury, or the commencement of treatment with various pharmaceuticals.

The results of the upcoming study will help ensure FAA aeromedical decision-making is predicated upon the most current scientific data, and will contribute to the safety of the national airspace system.

Pilots enrolled in the study will receive follow-up phone calls (or emails) confirming their respective time slots from Cherokee Federal, a third-party contractor tasked with officiating the undertaking. Participants are asked to note that confirmation calls may—depending on their phone providers—be mis-identified as SPAM.

The FAA states it is “depending on pilots like you to spread word about this paid research study.” Interested pilots are asked to inform their contemporaries of the study and refer such to the antecedent registration website.
