Marine Corps Harrier Jet Down In CA Neighborhood

Eight Families Evacuated From Their Homes, Pilot Ejected Before Impact

The Marine Corps says one of its Harrier jump jets went down Wednesday in a residential neighborhood near Miramar, CA.

In its initial news release, Marine Corp Air Station Miramar Public Affairs said "A Third Marine Aircraft Wing AV-8B Harrier stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma crashed in Imperial, Calif. at approximately 4:20 p.m. today (Wednesday).

"Civilian homes were impacted.  Damage assessments are being conducted. The pilot ejected safely and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

"An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash."

Television station KNSD reports that 22 people from five families were displaced from their homes following the accident, that three homes were destroyed and eight homes were evacuated. No one on the ground was injured when the plane went down, the station said.
