Qantas Pilots Protest Shoe Removal At Manila Airport

Flight Delayed While Crew Argued With Security

Should pilots have to remove their shoes too? Two Qantas pilots say no, but authorities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila say, uh, yes they do -- it's part of new tighter security measures being implemented to thwart terrorists.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the two Aussie pilots objected to the request by security personnel to remove their shoes Tuesday, saying they were being mistreated.

After arguing with authorities, the pair finally realized they weren't going anywhere until they doffed their doggies. Security allowed the crew to proceed to the aircraft once they got a good look at the -- empty -- shoes. The flight departed about 70 minutes behind schedule.

The Philippine government stepped up security in response to an incident last week, reported in a Philippine newspaper, when a security consultant says he smuggled C-4 explosive aboard a plane. You may have guessed... the plastique was purportedly attached to the sole of his shoe.

Philippine officials scoffed at the report, saying it was a hoax... but tighter checks of passengers' footwear were nonetheless implemented.

Reports indicate al-Qaeda-linked Muslim rebels train and operate in that country's southern region. Security experts warn the Philippines is a key target because they are strong supporters of US-led anti-terror efforts.
