Fence-Sitters on AirVenture Notified: The Corsairs Are Inbound

Another Excellent Lineup on is on Deck for Oshkosh 2023

This year's EAA AirVenture is shaping up to be the best in a while for those missing some in-person warbird time, with Aircorps Aviation's P-47D slated to make an appearance alongside a P-51C and a dozen vintage Corsairs.

If anyone has spent recent weeks humming and hawing over whether or not the trip is worth it, the news might be the piece that finally pushes them over the edge - as long as they know they missed out on early bird pricing. For those who've been around the air show circuit for a while, it's easy to forget how truly rare and treasured the few surviving airframes are, 8 decades after their combat debuts. The P-47D, Bonnie, is thought to be the "only flying Republic-built razorback in the world" according to the EAA. DTAM will bring its freshly restored P-51C Thunderbird, a well-known thoroughbred racehorse and '49 Bendix champ. At one point, it was used to net Joe DeBona a piston-powered speed record of 470 mph.

Topping off the warbird roster is an expected slate of 10 to 12 Corsairs, making their way to the model's gathering. The gull-winged legend has long been the quintessential USN warbird, (ignoring its less-than-popular carrier performance), and this year will be a rare chance for some to see a whole flock of them making some laps. The WWII aircraft aren't the only ones to make a showing, with plenty of later cold war and Vietnam-era birds on tap too. Expect to see the A-4, A-1, AC-47, C-123, O-2, L-19, Cobra, Chinook, Huey, and Loach at AirVenture - and if this year is like any other, there'll be a few surprise appearances too.
