Airborne 12.31.13: Reno Race Shakeup, Textron Talks Beech, Legacy 450 1st Flt

Also: FAA Reregistration Program ALL Screwed Up, Last DC-9, USAF Pilot Shortage, Benoist Flies Again!

"In its ongoing effort to revise and evolve its organizational structure and business model to ensure long-term sustainability, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) announced today the departure of its president & CEO Mike Houghton...."

In releases issued as most of America was still scarfing up leftover turkey and stuffing (with extra gravy), GA's remaining All-American powerhouse, Textron -- the parent to Bell Helicopter, Cessna Aircraft and Lycoming Engines -- has officially commented on and confirmed their purchase of Beech. That could be the message greeting hundreds, even a thousand or more aviators on New Year’s Day if you’re one of the unlucky ones whose aircraft registration expires on December 31st. Why? Because the FAA is woefully behind on its mandated 3-year re-registration program and if your registration expires, it isn’t renewed until the FAA says it is. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
