Aero-TV: The Reality of ADS-B 2020 - A Candid Chat With AEA's Ric Peri

AEA Sees Progress In ADS-B Equipage…

Of the approximately 140,000 aircraft that need to have ADS-B Out installed by January 1, 2020, only about 38,000 already compliant.

That is the assessment of Ric Peri, VP of Government and Industry Affairs for the Aircraft Electronics Association, told ANN editor Tom Patton at AirVenture in July, that the longer pilots and owners wait, the longer they'll have to wait in line to have their repair shop do the needed installations.

That's because the number of businesses that are certified to do the installations is not likely to change much, Peri said.

Most of the systems that will be sold in the next two years will likely be the more basic, simple systems that will get airplanes in compliance with the least amount of cost and downtime, Peri said. "The products are there, the capacity is there, but like capacity in any business, at lunchtime there's a large crowd."

The FAA's incentive program for the purchase and installation of ADS-B Out equipment ends September 18, 2017.
