Qantas Looking a Few Good Apprentices

Opportunity for Maintenance Apprentices in Sydney

Qantas just told us that it would expand its 2003 apprenticeship program, seeking applications for at least an additional 70 aircraft maintenance apprentices to be based in Sydney, Australia.

Executive General Manager Aircraft Operations David Forsyth said the new positions were in addition to 170 apprenticeships that had recently been offered in Sydney and Melbourne. New apprentices will commence working with Qantas from next month.

"Our highly trained maintenance staff are responsible for ensuring the Qantas fleet is maintained to the highest standards of reliability and safety," Mr. Forsyth said.

"As the Qantas fleet expands with new types of aircraft and engines, it is important that we sustain the skilled people needed to maintain them.

"As a result we recruit apprentices on a regular basis and currently have more than 300 apprentices in Sydney and Melbourne at various stages of their apprenticeship," he said.

Successful applicants are offered four-year apprenticeships which are primarily based at the airline?s Mascot and Tullamarine Jetbases, and will commence from February through June 2003. Apprentices will also be based in Brisbane in future years to support the new maintenance base there, which opens in 2004.

"The apprenticeships should be seen as the beginning of a career in aviation and offer a range of opportunities within the industry after graduation," Mr. Forsyth added.
