'Lost In Space' Returning To Production

New Version Will Be Offered By Netflix

A new version of a sci-fi classic is said to be coming soon to the internet streaming video service "Netflix" ... but like the series, a premier will be "sometime in the future."

The show is the campy cult classic "Lost in Space". Readers of a certain age will remember the series, which ran for three years beginning in 1965, about a family that was sent off into interstellar space to colonize a new planet. But a foreign agent sabotaged the effort, and the family became ... wait for it ... lost in space.

This time, "Lost in Space" will be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who together wrote the 2014 film "Dracula Untold".

Fox News reports that Kevin Burns, who now owns the rights to the original series, has worked for years to revive it. There was a previous "Lost in Space" reboot pilot in 2003 that was not picked up by a distributor, and a film version was released in 1998. This version has been in development for about a year, according to the report.

Sci-fi reboots have had seen some measures of success. "Battlestar Galactica" went from a camp "Star Wars" knockoff to a critically-acclaimed dark drama when it was revived, running from 2004 to 2009, and a film remake reportedly has been in the works since 2014. Of course, the "Star Trek" franchise is maybe the best example of such success.

As for "Lost in Space", there is no date yet for its launch on Netflix. The original series was set in 1997, which at the time was 30 years in the future. Those kinds of details about the new new series have not been made public.
