Airbus: Made In China?

Euro Plane Maker Outsources $33 Million

Airbus has signed its second contract in four months with a Chinese company to make aircraft parts, according to a report from Beijing.

The weekend edition of the English-language China Daily newspaper said Chengdu Aircraft Corp. will make some landing gear and aircraft frames for Airbus in an arrangement worth about US$33 million. The newspaper quoted Airbus China President Guy McLeod as saying the arrangement was signed in mid-March and that the company looks forward to more outsourcing arrangements in China.

Airbus had late last year finalized arrangements for China Aviation Industry Corp. I subsidiaries to make almost US$170 million of equipment. Chengdu Aircraft Corp. is in the AVIC I group of companies. The report said that since 1985 more than US$500 million of work had been subcontracted by the European consortium to Chinese companies
