Cargo Plane Down In Northern Iraq

32 Killed In Crash; Weather Suspected

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 01.09.07 1255 EST: A Russian-made Antonov An-26 cargo plane has gone down during landing at a foggy airfield north of Baghdad, killing 32 people and injuring at least one, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Turkish news agencies state the aircraft (file photo of type, above), carrying primarily Turkish construction workers, crashed as it tried to land at the US military base in Balad, about 50 miles north of the Iraqi capitol. The Foreign Ministry would not confirm that account.

The pilot had aborted a previous landing attempt due to bad weather and heavy fog, an anonymous ministry official told the Associated Press.

Reports state one American was onboard the aircraft, which was owned by the Moldovan Aeriantur M air cargo company. CNN-Turk television reported the company's owner was among the victims.

Aero-News will continue to follow this developing story.
