High Schools Can Register Until December 17th

General Aviation Manufacturers Association released a statement that their registration for the 2022 Aviation Design Challenge has opened.

The announcement came, suitably, on National Aviation Day.

This will mark the tenth year of the competition which promotes aviation and STEM careers in US high schools, with submissions from over 400 schools since inception.

Pete Bunce, GAMA President and CEO says, “We are excited to once again open registration for GAMA’s annual Aviation Design Challenge, especially as the program enters its landmark tenth year. It is fitting that we make this announcement on a day in which we celebrate the history and promote the future of aviation – National Aviation Day,” he said.

“This valuable program provides students with the opportunity to learn about the science of flight, the mechanics of creating aircraft, and the exciting career opportunities available in the general aviation industry,”

The challenge is open to 150 schools, on a first-come, first-serve basis. A “Fly to Learn” curriculum will be delivered for free to registered schools which will provide them information about learning the science of flight and airplane design principles. The curriculum lasts approximately 4 to 6 weeks and can be conducted in-person and/or virtual settings.

Teachers can guide the students through the process which ends in teams completing a challenge to virtually modify an aircraft design and complete a mission using X-Plane software.

The submissions will be reviewed by GAMA judges and the winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid general aviation experience. Second-place team members will receive a STEM Lab Camp courtesy of Redbird Flight Simulations.

Registration closes on December 17, 2021, or once all slots are filled.
