Airborne 08.03.17: Flight Design, Eclipse 500/550 Upgrade, EPS Diesel

Also: Hartzell Engine Tech, USPA Withdraws, Evolution A/C, Textron, CAE, Margo Chase Lost, Phillips 66

GA aircraft manufacturer Flight Design has concluded the sale of all major company assets to the investment group LIFT Holding and will be based at a new and modern facility near the historic town of Eisenach in the Thuringia region of Germany. The company will now be called Flight Design General Aviation GmbH.

ONE Aviation has confirmed the FAA approval of an unrestricted increase in the structural life limit of the Eclipse 550 and the Eclipse 500 in the extended tip tank configuration to 20,000 flight hours or 20,000 cycles, whichever occurs first. Previously the life limit had been 10,000 cycles, 10,000 hours, or 10 years, without enrollment in a life extension maintenance and inspection program. Completion of long term fatigue and damage tolerance testing of the aircraft structure and materials resulted in this change. Michael Fuchs presented preliminary testing results for the EPS 4.3 liter diesel engine in development during a media briefing at AirVenture. The engine, an 8 cylinder 180 degree horizontally opposed mill, targeting the O-540/550 family has showed good performance in testing aimed at certification. The Graflight V-8 engine employs an electronic control system. The engine is controlled with a single power lever, leaving traditional pilot chores like propeller pitch, fuel mixture and controlling engine temperature to the computer, reducing the risk of pilot error. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
