Congress Considers FFDO Legislation Today

FY06 Homeland Security Bill Goes To House

The House of Representatives is considering H.R. 1817, the Homeland Security Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006, along with the DeFazio/Mica amendment Wednesday. This amendment addresses the FFDO program and provides for a program to allow FFDOs to carry their firearms on their person at all times. It also calls for an increase in training facilities for pilots who wish to join the program.

ANN Contributor Captain Dean Roberts had a lot to say about the subject recently.

This legislation appears to address some of the serious concerns that Captain Roberts and others have about the current program. In particular, the amendment would do away with the requirement that forces a FFDO to check the weapon as baggage when deadheading. This situation has led to the loss of many weapons.

The Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations supports this amendment to the Homeland Security Authorization bill. CAPA is encouraging interested parties to contact their congressional member by phone and/or via email to ask them to vote in favor of the DeFazio/Mica amendment.
