Sikorsky Cancels Furlough Plans

Bases Decision On Hagel Announcement That Defense Civilians Will Be Recalled

Following an announcement Saturday from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel that 90 percent of the civilian workforce will be recalled, Sikorsky said that some 2,000 workers in Connecticut, Florida, and Alabama will not be laid off during the partial government shutdown.

The Associated Press reports that the Pentagon interprets a law passed before the partial shutdown which ensures members of the military will be paid on time as giving it the authority to bring back civilian workers. Some 350,000 civilian defense workers are expected to return to their jobs.

That led UTC and Sikorsky to cancel planned temporary layoffs. UTC said in a statement on its website that "plans to furlough employees at its aerospace businesses following the recall of Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) inspectors responsible for auditing and approving operations throughout the manufacturing process for military products" had been rescinded.

"United Technologies greatly appreciates the efforts of those in the Administration and Congress who facilitated the recall of the furloughed civilian employees in the U.S. Department of Defense."
