MIT Seeks Pilot Input On ADS-B, Weather Services

Survey Will Gather Data On How GA Uses The Technology

A team of researchers at MIT's International Center for Air Transportation is looking for input from GA pilots for its new study of automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) traffic and weather services to determine how pilots value and use them. ADS-B, a central component of the NextGen air traffic control modernization program, aims to improve traffic surveillance capabilities by sharing accurate aircraft position information between pilots and ATC.

In addition, ADS-B provides pilots with traffic information for nearby flights (traffic information service-broadcast, or TIS-B) along with relevant weather and airspace information (flight information services-broadcast, or FIS-B).

To receive these traffic and weather services, a pilot must have appropriate onboard equipment; installed avionics or a portable ADS-B receiver linked with a display device (such as an iPad or other tablet computer).

Even if you don't currently fly with ADS-B traffic and weather capabilities, the MIT research team values your input regarding how you would use this information if you had it. The center asks that you consider taking 15 minutes to complete an anonymous online survey.
