Su-27: The Rest of the Story

ANN Reader Jan Jehlicka, who sent us the photo of the Su-27's belly landing ("Those Who Have, Those Who Will ...and Those Who Won't, Ever Again," 05-23-02, ANN), sent us the rest of the story:

"The article by the editor/eye-witness/photographer is quite interesting. ... For the record: It happened during an air show in the capitol of Slovakia - Bratislava (next door to the Czech republic) in 1997. According to the article's author, the Su-27 belonged to the performance group Russian Knights. Series of low fly-bys with extended landing gear preceded this incident and according to the article (author's speculation perhaps) the pilot of the belly-lander lost track of where his gear was at the moment of landing.
"After he landed (most of the spectators had no clue this was not a part of the air show), the fire trucks rushed in, only to be stopped by the pilot who jumped out and ran towards the fireman to prevent the foam shower and 'save' the bird. Sure enough, they jacked the Sukhoi up on his feet, and after an inspection, it took off 3 days later and flew back to Russia.
"Pretty impressive if you ask me." [That goes for us, too --ed.]
