Israel Unveils Fleet Of IAI Heron TP UAS

Giant Aircraft Could Provide Surveillance Of Iran

Israel announced the latest addition to their air force fleet on Sunday with the introduction of a fleet of Heron TP unmanned aircraft.  The UAS can operate for up to 36 consecutive hours and fly as far as the Persian Gulf from their home base, putting Iran within their range.

The aircraft are an upgrade to the Heron produced by state-run Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). IAI claims the TP can operate at altitudes up to 45,000 ft. with a typical payload of 2,200 lbs.  The planes also boast an 87-ft. wingspan and 42-ft. length, making them the largest aircraft being used by the Israeli armed forces.

"With the inauguration of the Heron TP, we are realizing the air force's dream," commented Brigadier General Amikam Norkin, who will command the drone's operating base. "The Heron TP is a technological and operational breakthrough."

For security reasons, Israel is not releasing the number of Heron TPs that will be in service, nor the missions they expect to fly.  Reports from the AP state that operations Iran are one of the main reasons for the upgraded Heron TP.
