Some Fees Also Waived As People Evacuate From The Region

JetBlue and American Airlines have capped their fares out of Florida at $99 through September 13, and the low fares will apply for return flights for those returning home after the storm.

The Miami Herald reports that some airlines have reportedly been charging up to $3,000 for last-minute fares leaving the state. One passenger reported that Delta was asking for over $1,300 per person for a flight from Fort Lauderdale to JFK in New York.

JetBlue put their fare cap in place on Wednesday, and AA quickly followed suit. The fares are for tickets sold through Sept. 10th for travel until Sept. 13. JetBlue spokesman Philip Stewart said in a statement that the airline wanted "those trying to leave ahead of the hurricane to focus on their safe evacuation rather than worry about the cost of flights.”

JetBlue was offering the same fares out of Savannah, GA, Charleston, SC and several locations in the Caribbean. Steward said that there are a limited number of the seats available, and they are selling quickly.

The airline also waived cancellation and change fees as well as other fees. American is also waiving some fees due to the storm.

After being the subject of a Twitterstorm, Delta announced that it was capping its one-way fares from and to Florida at $399 through Sept. 13, as well as waiving all baggage and pet-in-cabin fees for customers traveling to or from the cities covered by a weather waiver issued for the region this week.
