Two CAP Members Appointed USAF Warrant Officers

Among First 100 Named In Re-Established WO Program

Two members of the Civil Air Patrol will join the first group of 100 U.S. Air Force warrant officers appointed into the service’s warrant officer program that was recently re-established after it was discontinued more than 65 years ago.

Senior Master Sgt. Luke Bunge of the Michigan Wing and Capt. Christopher Brun of the Hawaii Wing went through the Air Force Warrant Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.

Bunge now holds the rank of Warrant Officer 1 and Brun was appointed a Chief Warrant Officer 2. Both will add their technical expertise and operational leadership to their respective roles in the CAP and Air National Guard.

Bunge is the Michigan Wing’s director of information technology as well as its noncommissioned officer adviser, and has been a member of CAP since 2011.

He also serves in the Michigan ANG’s 272d Cyber Operations Squadron as a 17Y cyberspace effects warrant officer, developing tactics, techniques, and procedures for the cyber protection team.

Brun joined CAP in 2008 and is an information technology officer for the Maui Composite Squadron. He also serves as a 17W warrant officer with the 292d Combat Communications Squadron in the Hawaii ANG, where he provides combat-ready cyber communications support for the Pacific Region.

The Air Force has now had four classes of officers which produced warrants across active duty, Guard, and Reserve components. Bunge and Brun are members of the fourth class, which was comprised entirely of Air National Guard members.
