Sywell Aerodrome Cancels Airshow

Cites More Stringent Safety Measures Put In Place By CAA

The Sywell Aerodrome in Northampton in the U.K. has officially cancelled its biennial airshow for 2016.

In a notice posted on the aerodrome website, the organizers said it is "with regret" that they made the announcement that the show was cancelled.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that have supported us over the years and helped us raise many thousands of pounds for the Air Ambulance and other deserving Charities.

"Hopefully Sywell Airshow may return at some point in the future but in the meantime we hope that there will be a smaller, more intimate, event in August. Keep an eye on the Sywell Aerodrome website for details."

More details came from a Facebook post on the page dedicated to the airshow.

"Unfortunately the body governing civilian run airshows in the UK is looking to increase charges levied on airshow operators and display pilots by unsustainable amounts ranging from simple 100% increases for smaller shows to far larger increases for bigger shows (e.g. up from circa £2,000 to around £20,000!)

"This is likely to spell the end of many shows run on a tight budget, including charity airshows like ours.

"We would urge all of our fans to write to their MP to complain about the apparently unaccountable actions of the Civil Aviation Authority who are using the tragedy at Shoreham to attempt an outright cash grab, as we seriously doubt any input made directly to the CAA would have any impact whatsoever."
