Japanese Astronaut To Visit Gateway Outpost With Artemis

USA & Japanese Leaders Expand On CoRe Partnership: Japanese Astronaut To Join Artemis For Gateway Outpost

At a meeting earlier this week in Tokyo, Japan, US President Jo Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expanded on their Competitiveness and Resilience (CoRe) Partnership from April 2021,

with the White House announcing that they recognize the progress made and their commitment to broadening and deepening their bilateral economic cooperation.

Under the civil space cooperation came the announcement that a Japanese astronaut will be part of the Gateway Outpost and land on the moon as part of NASA’s Artemis program. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated that “Our shared ambition to see Japanese and American astronauts walk on the Moon together reflects our nations’ shared values to explore space responsibly and transparently for the benefit of humanity here on Earth”. This is also an effort to diversify our space exploration, and to also show others around the world that, as echoed by Bill Nelson, “America will not go alone but with like-minded partners. Under Artemis, it’s our intention to invest in and explore the cosmos with countries that promote science, economic opportunity, and a common set of shared values”

The CoRe partnership is an umbrella under which several competitive/innovative elements reside including: Digital Economy; Open Radio Access Network; Cybersecurity/Infrastructure Resilience; Collaboration on the Indo-pacific; Science and Technology; Civil Space Cooperation; Export Controls; Supply Chain Resilience; Global Health & Security; Scientific Cooperation; Climate Change, Clean Energy, Green Growth, and Recovery.
