STS-107 Down: Texas DPS, 'Too Much Debris To Secure'

The Texas Department of Public Safety says there are so many debris fields from the destruction of the Space Shuttle Columbia, its officers have no way to secure them all. DPS Spokesman Clay Kennely says his agency has received more than 2000 reports of shuttle debris on the ground, centered on the East Texas town of Nagodoches. In that historic city, debris can be seen in the parking lot of the First National Bank. The town's fire chief reports his house was struck by debris. There are no reports of injuries on the ground.

There are no reports of injuries on the ground. The debris found so far was reportedly pulverized by the shock of the shuttle break-up.

Columbia was reportedly traveling at 12,500 MPH when it broke apart, 200,000 feet over Central Texas.
