UK Carrier Flybe To Go Paperless With Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro

Regional Carrier Achieves Paperless Authorization From UK Civil Aviation Authority

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has granted paperless operational authorization to Flybe, Europe's largest regional airline. Flybe has integrated Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro on iPad as their electronic flight bag (EFB) solution fleet-wide, which allowed the carrier to gain paperless authorization status.

According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, Flybe was authorized to begin their paperless operation on Oct. 17, 2014. The use of digital flight information allows airlines to operate more efficiently by eliminating paper content on the ground and in the air. Elimination of paper content allows for reduced fuel consumption through weight reduction and improved bottom line results. Real-time, data driven flight information is displayed on iPad per the preference of Flybe pilots and FliteDeck Pro reduces flight preparation time and pilot workload significantly.

"This is an important move in marking Flybe's transition to operating in a fully digital environment," said Ian Baston, director of Flight Operations, Flybe. "Our pilots prefer having real-time, data-driven flight information available on their iPads and FliteDeck Pro provides the perfect product for this. It reduces flight preparation time and pilot workload significantly and crew have all the critical information they need immediately at their fingertips. The removal of weighty paper content on board is also an added bonus as fuel consumption is reduced, contributing to a more cost efficient operation."

Flybe uses multiple Jeppesen services to enhance their flight operations, including digital charting and flight planning, in addition to FliteDeck Pro EFB tools. Integration of these services increases situational awareness for pilots and provides consistent, familiar delivery of multiple forms of flight information.

"We congratulate Flybe for gaining UK CAA authorization to achieve paperless operations, which is a significant accomplishment in today's competitive airline market," said Tim Huegel, director, Jeppesen Aviation Portfolio Management. "The digital working environment provided by FliteDeck Pro includes streamlined access to current information for Flybe pilots wherever they are, using mobile technology."
