Texas Airplane Seat Makers Goes On Strike

Workers At County's Largest Employer To Walk Picket Lines

Union employees at Zodiac Seats U.S. in Gainesville, TX have voted to walk picket lines rather than manufacture airline seats, and walked off the job Tuesday.

Television KTEN reports that the meeting Monday night was the third for the union, which again voted down a proposed contract. Now, more than 1,000 workers are participating in the strike.

A three-year contract between the company and workers expired nine days ago. Teamsters Local 767 representative Tony Johnson said that the primary issues are work environment, schedules, seniority, and the grievance and arbitration procedure. Johnson says overall morale at the company is very low.

Johnson also said the company is trying to reduce overtime paid to employees, asking them to work 10-12 hour shifts on "straight time."

The union website indicates that the strike began at 0500 CDT Tuesday.

Zodiac Seats U.S. is the largest employer in Cooke County, TX.
