Rapid Implementation Needed Of FAA Reauthorization Section 627

Vertical Aviation International (VAI) testified to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation during a hearing to discuss stakeholder feedback on the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act. The Association urged the rapid implementation of rules to support low-altitude IFR operations for rotorcraft and powered-lift aircraft.

VAI emphasized that there is an urgent need for full implementation of Section 627 of the Reauthorization act which mandated the modernization of low-altitude routes using performance-based navigation. It also urged the FAA to proceed without delay while it prioritizes high-density airspace and simultaneously integrating those efforts with the broader air traffic control modernization initiatives.

Cade Clark, chief government affairs officer at VAI said in his testimony, “Implementing Section 627 is a critical step toward ensuring that rotorcraft and powered-lift aircraft can operate safely, predictably, and efficiently in increasingly congested and complex airspace. It also lays the foundation for integrating advanced technologies and aircraft into a modern, performance-based airspace system.”

His testimony reaffirmed the critical and indispensable role played by vertical flight aircraft in disaster response, firefighting, medevac operations, and infrastructure resilience. He highlighted the fact that nearly 1,000 helicopters were contracted for federal wildfire response missions in 2024.

VAI is committed to working closely with Congress, the FAA, and industry stakeholders to assure that Section 627 is implemented with the urgency, transparency, and technical precision required to meet the expanding demands of public service and commercial operations.
