Boeing CFO Acknowledges Airbus Woes Have Helped The Bottom Line

Planemaker Able To Hold Prices

In comments made Wednesday, Boeing Chief Financial Officer James Bell confirmed the American planemaker has benefited some from the turmoil surrounding its European rival, Airbus... but stopped short of making a direct link between pricing benefits and delays in several Airbus programs.

Bell told The Financial Times commercial aircraft prices have steadied -- and that market conditions have allowed Boeing to boost profit margins on many of its aircraft to above 10 percent.

"I think we've seen aircraft pricing stabilize. It's still a very, very competitive market...[but] I think we're holding our own on the value proposition," Bell said during an investor presentation.

Analysts say Bell's statements also show that Boeing isn't chasing business, by offering cut-rate deals to disgruntled Airbus customers; rather, customers are coming to Boeing regardless.

As a result, Boeing's commercial sales backlog grew to a record $174 billion in 2006.
