F-15 Down In England

Pilot Ejected Safely, Accident Under Investigation

An F-15D Eagle from the 48th Fighter Wing at Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath, England crashed at approximately 3:28 p.m. (10:28 a.m. EST) Wednesday, while conducting a combat training mission.

According to the USAF, one person was on board the aircraft at the time and ejected safely. A board of qualified officers will investigate the accident.

The BBC reports that the aircraft impacted the ground in a field near some houses and a school in Lincolnshire. Students of the Weston Hills Church of England Primary School were evacuated as a precaution, but there were no injuries.

A witness said that the plane was "coming down from the sky backwards like it was out of control in a spin."

Lincolnshire Police said in a statement that the plane had "come down in an isolated rural area and no premises have been affected.

"The plane belongs to the US Air Force based at RAF Lakenheath and the pilot has escaped with only very minor injury."
